My family adopted our lovely dog Bosco from the RSPCA (Royal Society for the Protection of Animals) around Christmas time in 2005. He was a beautiful Kelpie-cross and we spent many weeks going in and out looking for the dog for us. As first time dog owners the RSPCA was very helpful. We had gotten our cat, Ned, from them in 2001 and thought we’d adopt a dog there too and give a wonderful animal a second chance at life.

When we brought Bosco home to our 17 acre block he was very shy and nervous having come from a neglected background. Being only 12-18 months old he was fairly grown and not a pup anymore. We gave Bosco a very loving home where he learned to trust and became part of the family.

Recently, Bosco passed away which left a gap in our family. It just wasn’t the same walking outside and not having Bosco running around with you. Night times in the lounge without him in his basket or wanting cuddles became noticeable too. As did the leftovers from tea remaining on our plates.

Last week we went into the RSPCA hoping to find a dog to help fill that empty gap and help us remember the fun we had with Bosco. The first day we went in we fell in love with a 18 week old Kelpie-cross with the same colourings as Bosco. He was full of energy and loved his cuddles, just like Bosco did. The few days we were there we saw many dogs and cats adopted which puts a big smile on your face to know that so many animals are going to good homes. We picked our new family member up on Monday and brought him home. His new life begins with us now.

Getting animals from the RSPCA or an animal shelter is very rewarding. Not only do you find a beautiful animal which will be a great companion but you are also giving them a second chance to have a better chance in life. With a bit of TLC any animal you adopt from shelters can become a part of the family. Bosco and Ned sure did and our new pup Neo has now too.

So next time you go out to get a new cat or dog, check into the RSPCA or an animal shelter near you and see if you don’t fall in love with them. You may just find your dream dog or cat, and give a well deserved animal a second chance in life.

A different spin on the story of animals from the RSPCA

Thank you for posting such a beautiful and heart warming story. We also adopted our dog but from a family friend who couldn't look after her anymore. More people should adopt animals from this amazing organisation. It makes me so sad to hear about all the animals that are sent there and put down. This story definitely puts a happy light on the scenario so thank you for sharing it :)
